This is a vintage set of unmarked, single mount, silver inlay spurs by August Buermann. After a four-year apprenticeship in his homeland of Hanover, Germany, Buermann ventured to New York where he quickly found employment with Alexander Barclay. He ended up serving as a soldier in the Union Army for one year in 1864 and then purchased Barclay & Co. creating The August Buermann Manufacturing Co. of Newark, New Jersey. From 1866-1926 it was one of the oldest, most well-rounded, and trusted firms in the bit, spur and saddlery making industry in the United States. Styles were many and both mass produced, and hand wrought. Buermann utilized patents and had 35 skilled craftsmen enabling him to become a household name in catalogues across the country. He eventually acquired a four-story, 20,000-square foot factory where he invested in the latest machinery and tools. After 60 years in business the company sold out to North & Judd who honored the Buermann line separately in catalogues for over a decade. Buermann passed away 2 years later.
