After World War I, the British military recognized the need for a less powerful cartridge to reduce recoil and make training new recruits easier. This led to the adoption of the .38 S&W(38/200) cartridge in 1922. The Webley Mk IV in .38 S&W became the standard issue for British forces and police, replacing the larger .455 Webley Mk II.
The Webley Mk IV in .38 S&W saw extensive use in various conflicts, including World War II and British colonial conflicts. It was also widely used by police forces in the UK and other countries. The top-break design made for exceptionally fast reloads, which was a significant advantage in combat situations.
