Lettered Smith & Wesson Commercial Model 1917 .45 ACP Revolver
This is a recently acquired and fairly rare, lettered Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Commercial Variant chambered in .45ACP. The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 is a significant firearm in American history, designed during World War I to supplement the shortage of 1911 pistols. These revolvers were chambered in .45 ACP and were based on the Smith & Wesson Hand Ejector Model of 1917. They were primarily used by the U.S. military during World War I and World War II. However, the "Commercial Model" refers to a version produced for commercial sales after the war. Overall, the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Commercial Model is a classic revolver with historical significance and remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of vintage firearms. Precise production figures and dates for commercial variants of the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 revolver may remain elusive, but we do have a factory letter for this one. It states that the revolver was shipped from the Smith & Wesson factory or May 20, 1930, and delivered to Tufts Lyons Co., Los Angeles, CA. This revolver was shipped with a 5.5"-barrel, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips. The left side of the frame is marked with the S&W trademark and the right side with MADE IN U.S.A. Left side of the barrel is marked S. & W. D.A. 45. and right side is marked SMITH & WESSON. Serial number is visible and matches on the butt, cylinder face, barrel flat, and the back of the extractor star. It shows normal signs of wear and use with scattered peppering, and This is a great find and will make an excellent addition to any collection.
