This is a fine, and fairly rare, example of the innovative Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model, also famously known as the “ Lemon Squeezer.” This revolver features the desirable early hammerless design with factory grip safety, real mother-of-pearl grips, and retains its original nickel finish. The revolver comes housed in a red velvet-lined monogrammed presentation case with matching initials “ BTR
” engraved lightly on the right side of the frame — suggesting it was either a custom-order or presentation piece.
Historical Significance:
Smith & Wesson introduced the Safety Hammerless revolver in the 1880s as one of the first truly concealable and snag-free personal defense weapons. The 3rd Model, produced from approximately 1890 to 1898, incorporated improvements in lockwork and frame strength while maintaining its reputation for reliability. Serial number 88423 places this revolver’s manufacture date around 1893–1895. The presence of real mother-of-pearl grips and a custom monogrammed case indicates this was likely a personal carry weapon for a gentleman of means or possibly a presentation piece. These added features, particularly the case and matching engraved initials, are rare and desirable among collectors. It's in overall good condition for its era with normal wear.
